This being Phase I of the Stony Plain Care Centre re-development opened in April 2006. There is one 30-bed cottage to house residents with Alzheimer's or dementia. Each side of the cottage consists of 15 beds and residents will have their own private bedroom, including bathroom, and a large closet that includes locking storage. Residents are responsible for bringing in their own furniture. If a resident does not have any personal furnishings, the Client Services Manager will arrange to have some furniture available for resident use.
Cottage Living
The Good Samaritan Society has demonstrated a strong commitment to special programs that focus on the care of people with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. The Stony Plain Care Centre is a large cottage with 15 beds on each side accommodating a total of 30 residents. The development of innovative living projects, such as this one, reaffirms The Society’s commitment to community-based alternative models of care.
The care component of the dementia care program is based more on a social rather than a medical model of care. Residents can participate in daily activities associated with a home-like environment to the extent that they are able.
Key elements of this model of care are:
- Creation of a familiar, home-like environment.
- Combining privacy of accommodation with the security of around-the-clock staffing.
- Use of familiar household routines for residents’ activities.
- Staff serve as role models to engage residents in activities.
Eligibility for Admission
A Community Care Nurse will assess persons seeking admission to the Cottage Living Program at Stony Plain Care Centre. All assessments are reviewed and prioritized by Capital Health.
