Cottage Living

The Good Samaritan Society has demonstrated a strong commitment to special programs, which focus on the care of people with Alzheimer’s disease. Hillside Village consists of five, 12 - bedroom duplex homes (60 beds) for the care of persons with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. The development of group living projects, such as this one, reaffirms The Society’s commitment to innovative, community-based alternative models of care.

The homes provide alternatives for people with dementia, who can no longer benefit from other community-based services, such as home care or day care programs.

As with Independent Living, the care component of the dementia care program is based more on a social rather than a medical model of care. Personal autonomy and competencies are emphasized. Residents can participate in daily activities associated with a home-like environment. These kinds of opportunities are difficult, if not impossible, to offer in large care centres.

Key elements of this model of care are:

  • creation of a familiar, home-like environment
  • combining privacy of accommodation with the security of around-the-clock staffing
  • use of familiar household routines for residents activities
  • staff serve as role models to engage residents in activities

Residents will have their own private bedroom, including bathroom, and are responsible for bringing in their own furniture. If a resident does not have any personal furnishings, the site manager will arrange to have some furniture available for resident use.
Admission to our residency program is through the Community Services of Interior Health. This is a licensed complex care facility intended for those residents of Salmon Arm and the surrounding communities that can no longer live in their own home or community location and require 24 hour care/support. Residents wishing to be considered for this program should discuss this option with Interior Health.

For more information or how to qualify for admission, contact the Shuswap Community Care Health Services at (250) 832-6643.
