The Good Samaritan Place, which opened in 1983, is home to 40 seniors. All suites are equipped with an electric stove, self-defrosting refrigerator, individual thermostat temperature control, smoke/heat detector and heat lamp/grab bars in the bathroom for the safety and convenience of our tenants, cable television is also included. The emergency TeleCare Response System is optional and available to be equipped in each suite at a rental cost of $25.00/month. The Place is designated for independent living and all applicants for tenancy must be 65 years or older. Amenities in the area include shopping, library, medical centre, swimming pool, public transportation, churches of many faiths and a Senior Citizen's Centre. In 2001, The Good Samaritan Society (GSS) in partnership with Capital Health Authority (CHA), opened a second CHOICE© (Comprehensive Home Option for Integrated Care of the Elderly) Program for GSS and a fourth for Edmonton at this site. The CHOICE© Program operates five days a week however not all those registered attend every day. The program can accommodate up to 45 participants per day with a maximum registration of 90. This program provides seniors with complex medical conditions who might otherwise be eligible for admission to a continuing care centre, the advantage of living at home by utilizing the support services made available at the site. Participants come to the centre to access a broad range of services. Transportation and home support are used as needed. The program incorporates medical, social and recreational rehabilitation and social work, supportive care and a hot main meal. A multi-disciplinary team including a physician, social worker, chaplain, nurse, rehabilitation therapists, dietician and other health workers work with a program manager. The program provides participants with services of medical monitoring by physicians and nurses, pharmaceutical monitoring, health education, occupational and recreational therapy, personal care, hot meals and snacks, social work, spiritual care, and opportunities for friendship and social activities.
